ADA Bus Stops - Upgrade Program

Program Overview

The objective of the Bus Stop Improvements Program is to bring all Transfort bus stops into Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance so that transit is accessible and comfortable to people of all abilities and ages. Transfort’s Bus Stop Design Standards and Guidelines, adopted by City Council in 2015, is the guiding document for establishing ADA bus stops and accessible connections. Dedicated funding for ADA upgrades became available starting in 2016. The goal is for all Transfort bus stops to be ADA compliant by 2026.

Bus stop upgrades will be funded through a combination of a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant and local Community Capital Improvement Program (CCIP) funds. The grant will enable Transfort to upgrade approximately 90 bus stops in 2023 through 2024.

2023 Planned Upgrades

Planned and completed upgrades for 2023 are included in the list below. Transfort applied for an FTA grant to fund bus stop infrastructure improvements in 2024-2025; information about the grant application should be available in late 2023. As we move through the schedule this summer and fall, it may be necessary to temporarily move stops, close sidewalk sections, and do landscaping work. 2023 work will primarily focus on adding concrete pads where none exist. Notifications will be sent to properties adjacent to planned upgrades ahead of time. Additionally, door hanger notices will also be distributed in advance of the work. If you have any questions or concerns, contact RJ Glorso at rglorso@fcgov.com

The Prioritization of Stops

Priority is given to stops meeting certain considerations such as, but not limited to:

  • Stops with higher ridership,
  • Demographic considerations such as youth, seniors, people with disabilities and low-income population concentrations within a quarter mile of the stop,
  • Stops adjacent to roadways with high traffic speeds.

Sometimes certain stops may move up or down on the prioritization list for various reasons such as right-of-way challenges or to coordinate with other capital projects.

Note: Due to the funding source from 2019 - 2023, Transfort could only upgrade stops in the City's right-of-way.
